ITIL (the IT Infrastructure Library) is essentially a series of documents that are used to aid the implementation of a life cycle framework for IT Service Management. This customizable framework defines how Service Management is applied within an organization. It also aligned with the international standard, ISO 20000.

ITIL is organized into a series of five volumes (the books): Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transition, Service Operation and Continual Service Improvement. These in turn describe a closed loop feedback system that provides feedback throughout all areas of the lifecycle.
